Dr. Who

I've been hearing about the tv show Dr. Who for years. There's a spin off series too, called Torchwood. Ki likes Torchwood, which is one reason I started to gain interest in it as well. But I was never interested enough to actually search for it. Until today.
I was browsing through netflix, and found that they had the Dr. Who tv show on there. But, the show that came out in...whatever year it was 2005 or something, isn't actually the begginning of the series. The series started back in the 50's or 60's, went until the 90's, then went on hiatus for ten years before coming back. But the show now (at least, I think it's still running) is the same show as back then. Just technologified.
The basic premise, as I understand it, is that there's this alien called the Doctor, and he is in charge of protecting earth from other aliens. He can grow old and die, but then he just comes back in another form. (Which is why the series gets away with having had so many different people play the doctor over the years). Every doctor has a companion or two that travels with him. It's always different companions, because while the doctor is the same person, he's also a different person. Oh, and the doctor travels in this thing called the Tardis, which looks like a police box.
I found that netflix actually has a little bit of the earlier episodes. Not a lot though. Most of what it has before the current show is only one story arc here, and one there. But I figured that I'd start with those in any case. The first story arc I could find was one from 1964. That was about the doctor and his companions of the time traveling back to the Aztecs, and one of the companions getting confused for a goddess. What surprised me here was that one of his companions kept calling him "Grandfather." So the doctor actually had kids at some point? Weird.
The second story arc, which is what I'm watching now, is from 1968. This is a different doctor, and he has two companions, one of which is from Scotland. It's pretty obvious by the accent. Plus, he says he's from Scotland. This story arc is called "The Mind Robber" and I don't really know what happened yet. So far, they've managed to land the tardis in a nothingness place, that is sort of outside reality? It's a little odd. Plus, the girl that's his companion--can't remember her name--screams way too much. >.<
